Take the Written Examination The first step towards becoming a full-pledged firefighter begins with taking the firefighter exam. The test measures the individual's ability to understand oral and written directions, along with answering questions relating to mathematics, mechanical aptitude and reasoning skills. Physical Agility This process includes a series of events and activities which are designed to measure the applicant's physical endurance, strength and agility. Background Investigation After the firefighter exam and physical agility test, the background investigation comes next. Here, the local fire department or academy does a thorough check of the applicant's personal and employment history, along with contacting the persons that the individual knows. Always make sure you provide a truthful account of your personal and employment background, so that you'll pass this critical stage! Psychological, Medical and Orthopedic Evaluation The psychological examination determines if the applicant is presently suited to perform the tough, stressful, job of a firefighter. The medical and orthopedic tests are to confirm if the individual has no conditions or ailments that may restrict their ability to safely perform their firefighting responsibilities. Department Interview Once the applicant passes the firefighter exam and the other tests, an interview will be conducted by the local Fire Chief for final selection. After completing all the tests and interviews, applicants will then go through the challenging Firefighter Recruit Academy, where they will be trained and mentored on all aspects of fighting and preventing fires, as well as in responding to various medical and disaster-related emergencies.Once, the applicant passes the academy, he or she officially becomes a firefighter! On average, firefighters in the United States earn around US$40,000 plus. Once they go up the career ladder, they could earn US$55,000 annually if they become a lieutenant, or US$60,000 if they become a captain. Local fire chiefs earn an estimated US$70,000 yearly. Apart from earning basic salaries, firefighters also earn overtime pay, training and education reimbursements, as well as paid vacation and sick leaves. They usually work 12 or 24-hour shifts, which lead to longer intervals of paid time off. Best of all, firefighters also have the option to retire early, as firemen are only required to have 20 years of active service with their fire department, although the amount of pension they'll get varies from one location to another (along with their additional years of service).
